What Makes You Feel Guilty
By: Marcel Plante
By: Marcel Plante
Would you like to know what makes other people feel guilty? Well, let's find out. Maybe you have less reason to feel guilty then your peers! This article will dwell on this, and other subjects about what makes others feel guilty - and then we can learn what we can contribute to others guilt.
Michael, on the sharks team, when asked what makes him feel guilty, said, “when I am accidentally rude to someone. I try to be as nice as possible, but sometimes I just blurt.” Michael says he has a good reason to feel guilty. According to him, there are no exceptions when it comes to being rude. He usually feels guilty until he apologizes sincerely to that particular person.
Assietle, on the other hand, in 8th grade, said she feels guilty when she lies about being on her phone at night watching youtube. She says she has a good reason to be guilty because she knows she should not be on her phone at night. She feels guilty until she stops being bad.
Andraha Pradesh Gupta, a sharks boy, said that he felt guilty when he robbed a stuffed animal from a store. He said he will never stop feeling bad about it. He “definitely has a good reason to feel bad.”
Also in eighth grade, Josh, a well tempered boy, says something strange. What makes him feel real bad about himself is when he sleeps for more than seven hours. I found that this was extraordinary because scientists suggest adolescents to get an average of ten hours of sleep each night. He says he does not have a good reason to feel guilty at all, and thinks that he probably should get more than seven hours of sleep.
We have concluded that many people feel guilty about many different things, and you are not the only one who has done something really bad.

Zodiac Signs

Do you know what your zodiac sign is? It is an astrological sign that tells things like your personality, and things that you do and don’t like. If you don’t know what a zodiac sign is, some examples are Capricorn, Cancer, Sagittarius, and Scorpio. Your zodiac sign is based on when you were born. These signs were a myth from the ancient Babylonians.
70% of the people that we interviewed knew what their zodiac sign was, but only 50% of the people that we interviewed said that their zodiac sign correlated with their lives. Along with that, 80% of the students that we interviewed agreed that they liked to do things like taking personality tests to see if they correlate.
80% of the people we interviewed liked their zodiac sign. And 20% of them said “I don’t like my zodiac sign”. One person said “I like it because it sounds pretty and elegant”. On the other hand one person said that “I’d rather have a zodiac sign that correlates with my life and personality”.
Now you know what a zodiac sign is, if you didn’t, you should research yours. Does your lifestyle/personality correlate with your zodiac sign characteristics? Or is is it really just an old myth?

Is P.E. Really Necessary?
By: Abby and Antara
By: Abby and Antara
Most middle schools require you to take at least half a year of P.E (Physical Education) electives. These classes are also required to take every year in most primary schools. School directors say that these classes are necessary, but some students think otherwise. 60% of students interviewed state that, “P.E. shouldn’t be required because some kids aren’t built for it, or just don’t like it in general.” So, which side of the argument is correct? In this article, we will try to find out.
40% of middle school students say that P.E. should be required. They say this because middle schools don’t have recess, so they should have P.E. since it is a physical class that allows students to get more exercise. On the other hand, some kids think that P.E. is not needed because they could take an elective that helps them with academics, or something they have more fun in. When students take classes that they enjoy, it decreases their chance of skipping school, since they don’t want to miss that class. To review and find the best answer to our question, let’s look at the statistics.
According to classpeople.com, the rise of obesity in young children has become a growing concern. More than 40% of 16 to 19 year olds are obese, are are 15% of toddlers. If this is true, just under half of the children’s population is obese. Physical Education classes may help to give children time to exercise and the knowledge on how to stay healthy. We have to teach kids how to stay healthy, but is P.E. the best way?
Some may say P.E. is good, and some may not. Either way, P.E. is a physical class and some schools have it an elective choice, while others have it as a mandatory class. P.E. could possibly improve children’s health in the future. No matter what, P.E. is a class in most schools and most likely will be for a while. We should take advantage of it. Do you think that physical education classes are necessary?

Why the Wait for Incredibles 2?
By: Antara and Abby
The Incredibles is a movie from 2004 that illustrates a family of superheroes who have been legally banned from using their powers. The movie hit immense popularity, earning a total gross amount of $261,000,000. There was no word of the series from producers after its premier. A whole 14 years later, a sequel to The Incredibles came out. This is where our questions stem. Why did they wait so long to make a movie that is bound to make great profit?
The Incredibles 2 was a huge hit! The new storyline shows how the family from the original movie has moved on from previous events, and continues to add to their future. The movie had a box office of about $1 billion dollars. Children and adults across the world seem to have loved the movie. All students interviewed said that, “They had gone to see Incredibles 2,” and, “enjoyed the movie,”. It was a tie between which movie was better, the 1st or the 2nd.
Students liked the movie because of the closure it provided, character development,
action and suspense. Most adults have not seen Incredibles 2 yet,due to their busy schedules. Most plan to see it in the future. On the other hand, some kids have seen the movie not just once, but even twice! They said that in the second movie, animation quality increased. Many people enjoyed the movie and thought it was great, even though they had to wait for quite a bit of time.
If people liked both the first and second incredibles movies, why wait so long to make the sequel? Quora.com thinks that some of the reasons may include not wanting to rush the sequel, and the producers also may have wanted the sequel to be made with their best efforts. Quora also wrote that other superhero movies have, “fell flat on their faces” because of how good the original movie was. Students think the movie came out late because the producers had to think of a brand new storyline, (which is probably true due to how high quality the movie was) make the animation, and work on other movies all at once. Our theory is that the producers wanted to provide the best quality movie they could.
Both Incredibles movies were a huge hit, though they were released several years apart. Millions of people saw the second Incredibles movie. Not many of them minded the long wait because of the high quality movie that was produced. People think that Pixar took so long because they wanted to make an entirely new storyline that would please all audiences - which it succeeded in. No matter how long it takes to create the next movie - if there is one - people will forever love the nostalgic Incredibles series.

How Do Sports Affect Your Life?
By: Katie Hu
Sports are a common activity that a lot of people participate in. There is a large variety of them, too. I am trying to find out how these activities can affect your everyday life, both positively and negatively. Are some sports more effective than others?
First, I asked if sports affected people's school life or social life. Most people said it didn't affect their life that much although sometimes they have to miss school or social events for practice or other things sports related. It also affects how much time they have to do their homework.
I wondered how people felt about what times their practices were. “I think practice for Teen Titans [the group he swims in] is too short,” said Adam, a swimmer. Another person said that it can be difficult to balance practice times with school work, since she dances every day.
Both a dancer and a swimmer said that their sport doesn't really affect their mood except for when they get tired or “die”. Mary, a soccer player, said soccer makes her really happy. Another person said swimming was the highlight of their day and it helped them stay calm during school and let their energy out.
Some of the benefits of sports are staying healthy and learning multiple skills. Someone also said they liked traveling places for different events. People also said they make a lot of good friends. Some downsides are when you get really tired or sore and it takes up a lot of time.
Most people said they enjoy their sport more than they hated it because it helps them stay determined and motivated to keep trying and get better.
Many people are involved in team sports and said that their teammates are there for them and they depend on each other. However, Adam said some teammates can be annoying and “continuously touch your feet when you are slow.” People also said that their coaches motivate them a lot and help them get better.
My conclusion is that most people seem to enjoy their sport a lot and it seems like they are really happy when they do it and enjoy the benefits.

The Big Leap: Preparing for High School
Written by Mickey Nagy
The 8th grade students at Martin are currently preparing for a major life change - beginning high school. We will be attending bigger schools with more classes and extracurriculars, in one of our final steps towards graduation. This transition can be exciting, nerve wracking, joyful, or scary. In just four short months we will be leaving Martin for good to start the next chapter of our life. In anticipation for this, we interviewed some 8th grade students to ask them where they were going for high school and how they felt about the change.
A lot of students at Martin plan to attend Broughton High School next year. This is because Martin and Broughton’s base areas overlap, so everyone who attends Martin because they live nearby will be attending Broughton for the same reason. Broughton is known for its IB program, giving extra opportunities to advanced students, as well as a good sports program. It’s also the oldest high school in Wake County.
Some Martin students will also become Eagles in the fall at Enloe High School. This is because Martin and Enloe have the same magnet, so many students will attend to continue on the Gifted and Talented path. Enloe also has strong academics, with an IB program, as well as lots of Advanced Placement classes. They are also known for strong arts programs, diverse student body, and 8 world languages. Other schools Martin students will attend are Raleigh Charter, Garner, Millbrook, Leesville, Sanderson, and many more of the other wonderful high schools that Wake County has to offer.
The majority of students we interviewed were excited to start high school. They counted programs like band and biomed, sports and other extracurriculars, the chance to meet new friends, and a fresh start as reasons to look forward to their new schools. However, some were nervous, citing things like being scared to make new friends, keeping up high grades and a good GPA, as well as the size of the school as factors. Finally, we asked students what they would miss about Martin after they left. Many were sad to leave friends behind who were attending other schools, as well as our teachers and elective programs.
8th graders will soon leave Martin and step out into the great unknown, going to high schools across the county. This is a big transition we are dealing with. Everyone here, especially 6th graders who just made the switch, can sympathize with such a big change because we all did it when we left our elementary schools to come to Martin. We’ll all leave Martin with fond memories of the Ranch, and I hope we will all enter high school with the same excitement to create new ones.

Should Yoga Be Offered At All Schools?
By: Tanvi and Jaxyn
By: Tanvi and Jaxyn
“Research shows that mindfulness-based stress reduction, like that at yoga’s core, can help lower anxiety and stress,” says realsimple.com. We talked to Coach Hepburn the yoga teacher here at Martin Middle, and she gave us some opinions on how she thought that yoga benefited her and her students. First, we asked if she thinks that yoga should be a semester-long and she said that yes if more kids had the chance to take it. Next, we asked her if her students opinions on yoga itself improved during the class and she said that she thinks they really enjoyed it and it has opened their mind to yoga.
We did some research on how yoga benefits people and we found that yoga actually can stimulate the mind and help relieve stress. “The evidence is growing that yoga practice is a relatively low-risk, high-yield approach to improving overall health,” says Harvard health publishing. This quote shows that yoga is a good option for if you want to choose a low-risk sport. “Evidence shows that mind-body therapies such as mindfulness therapy, meditation, and yoga have been practiced in many other countries to reduce and/or manage the psychological effects of stress and anxiety.” says the journal of integrative medicine. This quote gives evidence that yoga can help you calm down.
We then interviewed 4 people who had taken the yoga elective to get their perspective in what they thought. We interviewed Asma, a seventh-grade student who had taken the elective for fun. Asma said that yoga let her “get more conscious and lower my anxiety”. She also said that her opinion on yoga improved during the course of the elective, she first thought yoga “was going to be boring and I was just going to fall asleep” but after the class, her opinion changed greatly and she now doesn’t mind yoga. We also interviewed Allison who also took the elective, she told us at the beginning of the course “I thought it was really complex and boring”, but then as the class went on it showed her there was a way to relax at school and take away stress.
After talking to the students who took the elective and Coach Hepburn who taught the Yoga class, we have come to the conclusion that yoga does help relieve stress and can benefit students greatly. After researching and interviewing students we believe yoga should be an option at all schools due to the fact that it gives students a way to de-stress and relax in school. The information we gathered from various websites back’s us up on that statement, for example, the journal of integrative medicine says “It appears that if schools... can incorporate yoga as part of the physical education curriculum, it will definitely benefit the students.” Do you think yoga should be an option at all schools?

Mental Health
By: Charlie Price and Harry Propst
By: Charlie Price and Harry Propst
Did you know that an estimated 17.1 million kids suffer every year from a psychiatric disorder? That number is more than diabetes, cancer, and AIDS combined. 18.5% of students suffer from a mental disease. These are very big numbers, and really make you think about the importance of being in a good mental state. We asked students from all over the school about mental health and how important it is to them.
We asked if the teachers do a good job of handling mental health issues and all the people that we asked said that they could do much better. Some answers that were said were “The teachers should make sure that the kids are truly ok,” and another answer was, “no we need a lot of social help in this school”.
After we asked them how many students they think struggle from mental health problems in our school. One said 20% and the other said half the school! These answers are very sad and we need to work to get them lower. Mental health is a big problem in schools and we need to help stop this by being kind to everyone, a national survey says that one in every five kids show symptoms of a mental health disorder.
After this, we asked them if social problems affect them or if one of their friends on a day to day basis. They said “Yes they make me feel uncomfortable about talking about my personal life” and another person said “They don’t usually affect me but they affect my friends sometimes”. Even though this is widely general it is still sad to hear from your fellow students. We had a lot of people not feel comfortable to answer this question.
Then we asked them if they struggled with anxiety and if they did in what way and how much. They said “ Yes I worry about school a lot and soccer outside of school and sometimes I just think if people actually like me” and another person said “ I constantly worry about my grades and how I’m doing in school”.
We need to teach our students to be confident in themselves and to have trust in their hard work and preparation. Maybe we should have a confidence class in school to support these kids in school and out of school.
The next question that we wanted them to answer was if they struggle or have problems with peer pressure. They gave us some good answers including “Yes very much so I got pressured into butterflying someone multiple times” and “This sort of thing doesn’t happen to me that often but it happens to my friends sometimes”.
Lastly, we asked them if they have more good days than bad days. Many people said no they have more bad days yet they said that they didn’t have any of the problems we asked above. This article is just the start of what middle schoolers really go through. Life isn’t as easy for us as some may think.

Do Friends Affect Students' Behavior?
By: Allie Camp
By: Allie Camp
Do you ever question sitting by your friends? If you’re thinking yes, then you are not the only one. All teachers that we interviewed agreed that when students sit with their friends it does reflect on their grades. This can be in both, positive and negative ways. Teachers DO recognize it when you don’t do your work because you were talking. Don’t think that it goes unnoticed.
75% of the students we interviewed agreed that they can typically get their work done quicker when they are by themselves, rather than with a partner. They said this because they aren’t distracted, so they can fully focus on the assignment that has been given to them. One student said… “She gets her work done better by herself because she can do it her way without having to agree about it with someone else.” Students said that they could make all of the decisions quickly so that they would be more productive.
When we asked teachers about seating in their classroom, they said that when students sit with their friends it can affect their grades in positive and negative ways. One teacher said, “This is because they will talk to their friends instead of doing their work.” However, some students are productive, and get their work done on time. The teachers that we interviewed said that they mostly choose partners for their students because that way they’ll be more productive.
With what has been said, 85% of the people at Martin that we interviewed agreed that when students don’t sit with their friends, or they have assigned seating, they can get their work done better, and more efficiently. So, if you’re hoping to improve your focus and grades in school, try doing your work by yourself, and see if your work is better alone.
